Task Summary

Conduct a data science case study in a chosen domain, for example, business, education, environmental and healthcare. Write a report on your case study. The report should be written in a clear and concise manner (and be no more than 2000 words in length). You should start by exploring the domain that interests you. You need to identify a compact dataset in your chosen domain which can also be used for Assessment 3. Your report should include the background of the chosen domain and the data science problem, aims and objectives, significance of your case study, ethical issues in the chosen domain and describe your analytics approach including the statistical method(s) you used to address the problem.

Context

This subject has one theme; that is to provide the knowledge of data, data science approaches, data scientist tools and the relevant application scenario for the chosen domain. In the data science process, data scientists need to identify a data science problem from the chosen domain or industry and the approaches to the problem. They need to have knowledge of statistics, data science tools and programming languages. To break into the competitive data science market, data scientists also need to have in-depth knowledge of mathematical foundations of machine learning and be competent to apply machine learning towards practical use cases. Proficiency in programming and use of advanced data science tools are also required for advanced data science. Data scientists also need to be aware of the data science code of ethics.

The present assessment has been designed to help you build the necessary skills to achieve the following learning objectives to fulfil the learning outcomes of this subject. After completing this assessment, you should be able to:

• Identify a data science problem in a domain and the analytics approach to the problem;
• Apply data science skills and tools relevant to software engineering practice; and
• Explain the ethical issue(s) and responsibilities related to the chosen domain

By completing this assessment, you will clearly understand the basic principles of data science, analytics approach and how they relate to the data science problem in your chosen domain. You will also understand the ethical issues and responsibilities relevant to the chosen domain.

Task Instructions

Your case study should be detailed and include the following:

• A well-developed and concise ‘Abstract’ section;
• A clear and considered statement about the data science case study and the background of your chosen domain as a part of the ‘Introduction’ section;
• A clearly defined problem of the chosen domain in your data science case study;
• A description of the significance of your data science case study in the chosen domain;
• A section that highlights the aim and objectives of the case study;
• A discussion on the dataset in the domain which will be used for Assessment
• A statement and description of the analytics approach including statistical technique(s) that will be used to address your problem; and
• A statement and discussion of the ethical issues either on the data itself or the ethical issues and professional responsibilities in data science in the chosen domain in your case study.

Note: Your chosen dataset should be compact with no fewer than 3 variables and no more than 10 variables. You will be using the same dataset in Assessment 3. This assessment serves as the planning document for Assessment 3. Suggest you read Assessment 3 and resources in the website (Exploratory Data Analysis Tutorial in Python, 2020) before selecting the dataset. Recommend you choose the dataset in .csv format. The datasets used in this website are excluded to be used for both Assessments 2 and 3.

Additionally, your report should be:

• Clearly written (e.g., the content should be well organised) and according to the format given in the instruction task;
• Use the APA referencing style and include a references section at the end that comprises full references for all your in-text citations.

The title of the report should be the same as that of your data science case study. The report should follow the format outlined below.
