Assignment 2
This assignment continues with the theme of numeracy as the confidence and capability to choose
and use mathematics by inviting pre-service teachers to plan an investigation connected to an
interest, task or problem from their lifeworlds. The investigation needs to have a rich mathematical
focus, require some form of data collection (minimum of 10 questions) and/or secondary data
analysis/interrogation (minimum of 3 sources) and lead to some action being taken. For example,
choosing the “best” mobile phone plan to suit personal needs or investigating water wastage in
bottling water for sale. This plan is to be written up using the guidelines below.

Due: Online by 5pm Friday September 25th.

You were introduced to data representation, collection and analysis and have been asked to build on
this to investigate a critical issue of your choosing. The key focus of your investigation must be
clearly identified and justified and the investigation must either involve primary data collection
AND/OR secondary data interrogation. Assignment 2 involves the initial write up of your
investigation and hence is an essay/report, you will be assessed on your academic writing skills
(these include issues such as grammar, paragraphing and referencing) and your use of appropriate
literature to support your writing. Assignment 2 does not include the collected data or analysis of
this, as these will be the focus of assignment

The essay/report should include the following:
 An Introduction to the investigation which clearly identifies the critical aspect that will be
investigated and the justification for choosing this focus.
 A discussion of the significance of the issue which should include a review of appropriate
literature (including current media sources). This significance can be from a critical view or a
teaching implications perspective.
 An outline of what data will be collected and how it will be collected. Tools for data
collection should be attached as appendix and referenced to appropriately in the text.
 Include minimum of 6/7 references.
You are also required to submit your essay in MS Word or PDF format online. All references should
use the modified Harvard style and the assignment should include a reference list in the same
style. Appendices are to be included in the submitted file and should come after your reference list.
