Case Study 5 – Mr Michael Shaw

 

Michael Shaw is a long term resident in an Aged Care facility.

He has moderate level dementia, and has recently returned from a hospital stay having had a shoulder operation.

In the evenings, once Michael is in bed, he has the tendency to regularly ring his call bell.

When staff go to his room, they find he has no reason for calling it. This causes frustration amongst the night staff.  So when Michael presses his buzzer continually again, two staff members attend to Michael, one using distraction, while the other takes the call bell and places it out of his reach on his injured side.

They then talk him into thinking he is tired and tell him it’s time to go to sleep. Michael is non aggressive and compliant with this.
