Answer the following questions for each of the fivekey readings in modules 1 and 2:

Assessment 2: Leadership for Community Engagement Presentation Assignment Answers

Consider and then choose one of the following scenarios:

Scenario 1:

Local school, Newvision Primary, deserves a higher reputation than it currently enjoys. Members of the school community include significant players who damn it with faint praise, as well as those who are publicly critical of its staff or its outcomes and those supportive of the school.

The school distributes a fortnightly newsletter promoting its activities. Sporting and cultural achievements are publicised in the local media. The school grounds are neat and tidy, visitors’ parking is adequate and the main entry is well signed. Actual complaints to staff members are few and far between. Where these are made, they are generally acted upon efficiently and appropriately. However, this seems to have little impact on the undercurrent of comment within the school community.

 

Scenario 2:

Private provider, Happy and Healthy Early Childcare Centre, is struggling with declining enrolments after the local newspaper ran a negative story about complaints from a dissatisfied parent and former client of the centre that their food menus were too high in sugar and fats.

The centre has been operating out of its current leased space for more than 10 years and the building and furniture are starting to show their age. The centre staff are long term employees who are dedicated and experienced carers. The centre has a functioning website and they use that site as their primary marketing tool – as well as relying on decade old verge signage out the front of the building on a busy highway.

The local community has been experiencing gentrification over the last 5 years and neighbourhood families have become more affluent and multicultural than when the centre first opened. The centre is close to a large hospital and a primary school with an excellent reputation. There is a noticeable increase in young families renting and buying homes in the local community.

 

Scenario 3

Tradie High School, located in an outer suburb of a large city, has almost 2500 students on a huge campus with a number of sporting ovals, a recently funded trade training centre, an ancient concrete swimming pool and many double brick two-storey buildings that are not compliant with modern disability access codes. In its heyday, Tradie High, was famous for being the school setting in a national soap opera and the school’s alumni boasts a deputy prime minister from the 1950s. These days, many students are a little embarrassed by their school’s famous history and prefer to cover up their uniform with black jackets in public.

The high school is located adjacent to the local TAFE campus. The state government deliberately co-located the secondary and tertiary campuses and for several decades the school and TAFE worked closely together. That came to a sudden stop three years ago when the TAFE CEO and Tradie’s principal had a nasty, and petty, falling out over a botched funding opportunity and a heated argument over which students could have access to new 3D printing equipment.

Tradie High School students are achieving acceptable graduation results and 25% of each year’s cohort typically go on to study at university. Approximately 50% of each year’s graduating cohort enrol in TAFE but this percentage is declining each year. Youth unemployment is far above the national average.

Your assessment 2 task is to create a presentation as if you were a consultant hired by the governing Board for one of the three education sites described in the above scenarios. You are tasked with developing a series of recommendations that will result in a proactive, determined and systematic endeavour to improve the image and reputation of new vision Primary or Happy and Health Early Childcare Centre or Tradie High School. (NB. Under extraordinary circumstances a student can negotiate with Dr Cunningham to use a fourth option with an agreed different scenario that better suits a student’s work experience in a different type of education institution).

To do this task you need to:

• Identify the skills which will be essential in meeting the challenge.
• Identify the fields of knowledge which will be important.
• Devise a public relations and marketing plan for the school/centre.
• Report on the plan via an audio visual presentation for the school/centre’s governing board.
