Pre-module Assignment
We will be using SPSS software extensively in this course. Therefore, it is important that you come to class on May 1st with SPSS version 23 or above already installed on your laptop (as well as Excel). If you don’t already have a copy of SPSS, for $35 you can buy a copy of SPSS 25 for Windows or Mac online at https://studentdiscounts.com/ibmspssstatisticsgradpack25basedownload-winmac-6mnth.aspx.
This will give you a 6-month license for two laptops – hence you can share the cost with another student ie. $17.50 per student. (please note when buying the software you will need to give an address located outside of the UAE – I recommend putting any address you like in Australia or the USA and then the transaction will be allowed). I also have some versions of SPSS 23 which I can share with students for free (please email me if you wish to use one of these copies). We have used this website extensively for previous MBA cohorts and have never had any issues. You may also be able to download a free copy of SPSS from certain sites on the internet if you are aware of P2P torrenting. You can also consider a PSPP download which is a free legal open source option – the software is very similar to SPSS. However, I do recommend using the studentdiscounts site and buying a licensed copy of SPSS as you will also need to use SPSS extensively in the MBA Data Collection and Analysis course and also when conducting your thesis.
In class on May 1st you will have a small assignment to work on in the afternoon which will require you to provide a brief descriptive analysis of income inequality across the globe. For you to be prepared to undertake this in-class assignment you will need to complete the pre-module assignment which requires you to do the following:
1) Make sure you have SPSS installed on your laptop for class on May 1st. At the start of class I will check everybody’s laptop to make sure you have the software installed – this is worth 3% of your final grade.
2) Visit the World Bank databank site at http://databank.worldbank.org/data/home.aspx. Locate data on GDP per capita data for every country in the world, for the years 1993 and 2017. There are a few different GDP per capita series in the databank so please select the one titled “GPD per capita (constant 2010 US$)” as shown below:

3) It may take you a little while to figure out how to find this data set in the databank but once you have it, please download it into Excel and clean it up so it looks like the picture below. Please note you do not need to do any analysis on this data set – we will work on this together in class on Friday.
