Review On Competitive Set
During my internship, one of my daily tasks was to go to the Hiltons biggest competing hotels to write down which companies are holding events at their property on that specific day. We use this to analyse what kind of companies are interested in which kinds of event venues, and most importantly: why them. I came to the conclusion while doing this that my initial competitive set was correct, but the Hilton chose to focus only on their 2 biggest rivals lately. These are the two hotels I am visiting every day: the Pullman Brisbane and mainly the Sofitel. The reason why the Marriott and Stamford Plaza are not a very big competition is because their event spaces are smaller and not recently renovated, comparing to the ones from Sofitel, Pullman and the Hilton. Besides, a new competitor just opened their doors during my internship, which is the W Hotel. This hotel will be a big competitor to the Hilton because the brand is new and refreshing, has a great design, is a 5-star hotel like Hilton, focusses on the same target group which is business and leisure, and has new and very well-designed event spaces to offer.

Cultural Awareness Expectations
Australia is located in Oceania, and counts 22.507.617 inhabitants. The country is democratic and the primary language used is English. Australians are very down to earth and value authenticity, sincerity and relationships. They prefer people who are modest, humble and who have a sense of humour. Australian people can be very direct in the way they communicate with others. In their business life, Australians are not very formal so greetings are casual and prefer using first names. They get down to business quickly with a minimum amount of small talk. Although punctuality is very important, meetings tend to be very relaxed.
Reflection on Reality
At first, I expected the Australian inhabitants to be direct, down to earth and relaxed.
During my internship, I came to the conclusion that most of this is true. Although the Australians are very relaxed and kind, they are way less direct than initially expected. In contrast, the one thing that was very outstanding for me is the fact that they are very polite, rather than direct. Especially in work related relationships, coming across friendly and polite and pleasing others seems to be much more appreciated than sharing your honest opinion. Also, in their business life people in Australia tend to be a little less casual than expected. Even though they enjoy small talks and come across extremely enthusiastic and friendly, most Australians do prefer using last names as they are very polite.
