COVID-19: Health Economics Case Study Assignment

The COVID-19 pandemic has had huge implications on healthcare delivery and consumption of healthcare resources. Modelling for healthcare resources is key to predicting demand for services. You live in a city of 300,000 people. 70% of the population are adults 18-60 years, and 20% of the population is over the age of 60, with 10% under the age of 18. There are 2 hospitals each of a potential of 400 beds available for medicine serving this population. In addition, there are a total of 60 ITU/critical care beds. Utilising the published data on COVID-19 for admission to hospital and consumption of ITU beds, provide some crude modelling for the requirement of beds for these hospitals.

Assume 80% of the adult population are affected over a 3 month period. There is a 1% mortality rate. You will need to unearth evidence for the length of admission (assume older people ( age>60) will have a twice as long length of stay as you calculate for younger people on both ITU and general medicine beds and no people under 18 will need admission), and admission rates. Then perform 3 new models using different values to see the effects, e.g. increasing mean length of stay by 2 days or increasing the number requiring ITU by 5%.
