This assignment essentially forms the introduction to your clinical portfolio of evidence, recording your baseline levels of proficiency in relation to the proposed HCPC Professional Standards for Sonographers (listed in the CASE Standards for Sonographic Education, Appendix 1).

The aim of this assignment is for you to introduce yourself to the reader of your portfolio by providing an overview of your experience relating to the competencies expected of a sonographer. This provides a snapshot of your experience at the start of the course. As our students vary in their backgrounds and levels of experience, this will help the teaching team to understand the training we need to offer, as well as enabling us to learn more about you as an individual.

 

Many of the standards are generic and you do not need to go into too much detail around these. e.g. you might just state ‘I am a native English speaker with good written and verbal communication skills (Section 8.8)’

For other competencies, it is likely that you have already acquired transferable skills through previous roles or qualifications. In this case, you should refer to your previous experience, but may also wish to comment on how these experiences translate to a sonographer role.

For example, “I am already a qualified registered nurse, and have been working for 3 years in the NHS. As part of my training and experience in nursing I have gained skills in patient communication (competencies 8.1 -8.7), however, I am less familiar with competencies around advising “other healthcare professionals about the relevance and application of ultrasound examinations to the service user’s needs” (8.8) and I am not currently “able to formulate and provide information to service users about ultrasound imaging process and procedures”. These are competencies I hope to focus on and acquire as part of the course.”

 

Throughout the text, please map your statement to the relevant competencies, and make sure all competencies are covered. You may wish to list more than one element of experience per competency, or you may find that more than one competency is covered by a single piece of evidence (e.g. 7.1-7.3 are likely to be covered by your hospital’s mandatory data protection training. For section 7.3 you may want to expand on a safeguarding situation where you needed to put your training into action.)

 

 

You should also submit the list of competencies along with your essay. This is then used as a checklist to show where in your essay you have addressed each competency (See above as an example).

At the start of the course, we expect lots of gaps. This assignment provides an opportunity for you to identify gaps and reflect on your professional development to date. When we return to these statements at the end of the course, we hope to see evidence that you have acquired all the necessary proficiencies to be a safe and effective sonographer.
