 You have been successful in gaining an internship with a consultancy business called Claret and Blue Consultancy Ltd.

Your line manager is preparing to host a 2-day Global Trade Conference.  This is an event where organisations interested in expanding their business into new markets will be seeking information and advice on undertaking business in a global environment.

As part of your internship you will assist your line manager in organising and preparing for the event.

You have been asked to complete a number of tasks.

Task 1

 Prepare a draft presentation and speaker notes for delegates at the conference, so they can understand the differences between global business operations operating in different contexts.  There are likely to be over 50 delegates present so the style of your presentation will need to take account of this.

Your draft presentation and speaker notes must cover the following points on global business operations:

  • an analysis of the differences between global business organisations working in different sectors, industries and contexts
  • an assessment of the responsibilities of business organisations operating in a global environment
  • an evaluation of strategies employed by business organisations operating in a global environment

Task 2

In addition to the presentation you have been asked to provide each conference delegate with a handout that sheds light on the significant economic and political factors impacting on organisations.  Your handout should meet the needs of the conference delegate and cover the following:

  • an evaluation of the benefits and challenges to global business operations from external factors
  • a review of measures taken by governments to influence the activities of global business organisations

To achieve a Merit you must produce a second handout which:

Task 3

 At the conference, your line manager is approached by the Chief Executive of an organisation representing local businesses.  The Chief Executive has asked Claret and Blue Consultancy to produce a booklet which his members would use as an example of the types of issues impacting on business activities in a named country.  Your line manager has asked you to produce a draft for his consideration.  In the booklet you must:

  • review the environment in which global business organisations are currently operating in your named country

Task 4

At the end of the conference your line manager asks you to prepare a magazine article.  The purpose of the article is to provide an exposition of the significant issues coming out of the conference and in particular the impact of global factors on business organisations.

The article needs to include:

  • an assessment of the impact of globalisation on the operational management of business organisations
  • an evaluation of how technology has impacted on the global integration of business organisations
  • an evaluation of the different approaches to leadership and decision making in global organisations

Guidelines for assessors

Work submitted by learners must achieve the learning outcomes and meet the standards specified by the assessment criteria for the unit. To achieve a merit or distinction grade, the learners must demonstrate that they have achieved all the criteria set for these grades. Where work for the pass standard is marginal, assessors can take account of any extension work completed by the learners. The suggested evidence listed below is how learners can demonstrate that they have met the required standards.

The learner must produce an informative presentation on an appropriate presentation software.  This should be accompanied by a set of notes which demonstrate the learner’s understanding of key differences between global business operations.  The learner should choose an appropriate format for the presentation to meet the needs of the delegates.

The presentation and notes should provide a clear analysis, using a wide range of examples of the sectors in which organisations function. In addition, the analysis must also consider the key differences between a range of organisations in terms of nature, scale, structure and legal status. Examples of different types of business operation should be provided.

The presentation and notes should also assess the responsibilities that organisations have to a range of stakeholders, providing specific examples of stakeholder needs and possible conflicts between different stakeholders.  Examples of organisational stakeholders and different needs should be drawn from an international perspective and learners must consider the ethical issues surrounding global business operations.

The learner should also evaluate a range of key strategies and how they should take account of global differences.

The learner must provide a hand out to accompany the presentation, which underpins their understanding of the impact of external factors on organisations.  The evaluation must be balanced and cover both benefits and challenges to global business operations from external factors
The review must be detailed and cover a range of measures taken by governments to influence the activities of global business organisations.  Learners should include specific examples to demonstrate that the standard is met.

The learners are required to relate their work to a named country.  There are a number of standards in this unit which refer to a named country and learners may wish to use one country for their work, although this is not a requirement. Learners must produce a full analysis of how the national economic performance in the named country impacts on the activities of global business organisations. Learners must use exemplar material to support the analysis.
The report must be appropriately structured. The evaluation should be current and examine the impact of the global dimension from different perspectives, using examples. The work should lead to judgements and conclusions.

The review should be detailed and specific examining the issues and opportunities which organisations are facing in the named country. Learners must provide a range of information and examples should be used to illustrate how the environment is impacting on different organisations, both favourably and unfavourably.
The booklet must be appropriate for the specified audience.  The learner needs to consider a range of strategies which are directly related to the named country and the learner should express views on their success or potential for success.

The learner must identify the organisation and the country which are the basis for their work. The assessment must consider the strengths and weaknesses of the opportunities and challenges and lead to personal judgements.

The learner must produce a magazine article in an appropriate format for the intended audience.  The article must cover the key topics which are listed in the assignment. The learner work must be balanced considering strengths and weaknesses and judging the evidence from the different perspectives, so that it demonstrates the understanding required by the LO.
