PSA (The Port of Singapore Authority)

The Port of Singapore authority (PSA) is a service supply chain based organisation that has rapidly expanded from servicing only Singapore to now operating in nearly 30 ports around the world. A fundamental question will be: how has it been able to achieve this successful and substantial expansion?

Answer the following questions:

1. What are the core capabilities of the PSA that it has been able to take to the many ports that it operates?

Hint: These must relate to information systems, material handling (which comprise essentially container handling equipment), and the expertise of its leaders and managers.

2. It can be argued that the business rationale for global expansion is based around the operational excellence of this company. Identify and explain the elements of Operational excellence such as Competitive cost, quality and delivery performance that have contributed to the PSA operation. How does this company add value to its Global operations?

3. The following is a conceptual framework, from Hayes and Wheelwright’s 1984 book, Restoring Our Competitive Edge.

What stage is the PSA at relative to the four stages in the framework? Justify your evaluation of the company.

4. Define the characteristics of a role model operations manager for a port, whether it be Singapore or the Panama Canal or any one of the 30 or so other ports that the company operates. What kind of attributes, such as systems knowledge, human resource knowledge and customer focus, would make him or her successful?
