PD06 Movement of Goods
- Your initial submission must include ALL four assignments. If one or more assignments are referred, you can re-submit these on an individual basis, but not in the first instance
- Each assignment should consist of between 2,500 and 3,000 words. You must clearly show the number of words used (excluding appendices, diagrams etc.).
- The questions are designed to test your understanding of the theories/principles involved and their application
- The answer should be relevant and concise
- Examples are always welcome and, if specifically asked for, they must be included.
- The marks will be based on your knowledge of fundamental elements, use of programme content, your conclusions/recommendations and presentation.
- Each assignment is marked out of 100, with a 50% pass mark. Full marking criteria can be found on page 4.
- Assignments should be stapled in the top left hand corner.
- Each assignment should be submitted with a separate cover sheet found on page 5.
- Style: You should use font 12 point Arial, 1.5 spaced, standard
- Referencing: Your work must be referenced and there are a number of referencing systems but the Harvard system is recommended. Harvard: author and date appear in the text and in the references at the end of your work in alphabetical order of author’s surnames. Do not keep web references separate and do include the date Do not put references in footnotes.

Assignment 1 – Unitisation, Containerisation, Recovery and Recycling
Element: PD06-1 – The Goods to be Moved
You have been asked to give a detailed explanation to your Managing Director in relation to how recent developments in unitisation, containerisation, recovery and re- cycling of waste products can help your organisation improve its overall sustainability.
For a transport operation of your choice, produce a detailed explanation of how these four, transport related, topics can all contribute to business sustainability.
Assignment 2 – Routeing and Scheduling
Element: PD06-2 – Origins, Destinations and Routes
For each of the four main modes of transport (road, rail, air and sea) discuss how the requirements for routeing and scheduling vary by mode.
Discuss the problems faced by routeing and scheduling staff moving goods using each of these modes.
Assignment 3 – Service Level Agreements and Key Performance Indicators
Element: PD06-3 – Modes of Transport
For a mode of transport of your choice:
- Discuss the difference between SLAs and KPIs.
- Develop a series of essential SLA items that you would consider to be appropriate to use for a 3PL. The 3PL in question will be required to distribute TWO different types of goods from TWO different locations. You must clearly explain why each SLA item you identify is essential.
Assignment 4 – Supply Chain Management
Element: PD06-5 – Logistics and the Supply Chain
- Discuss how the supply chain activities of Cross Docking and Activity Based Costing enable transport operators to reduce costs, improve customer service and improve the overall efficiency of a transport fleet.
- Explain how a transport operator should monitor Cross Docking and Activity Based Costing in order to ensure that they are delivering the benefits expected.
