Question 1 (40 marks)

Following on from the task allocated for your pre-module assignment students are required to complete a proposal similar in format to the Research Proposal Form required as part of your MBA Thesis study.

Your research proposal will need to include the following:

  1. A thesis title
  2. A summary of what your thesis research is about that includes the following:

A.  At least two research questions

B.  A literature review related to your thesis topic (Approx 750 words)

C.  Discussion of the research methodology you plan to use in your thesis to assist you in answering your research questions

D.  A diagram outlining your thesis structure (similar in style to the one discussed in class)

Question 2 (30 marks)

  1. Prepare a brief literature review (250 words) on the financial theory related to the efficient market hypothesis (market efficiency) that we discussed in class.
  2. You are required to test the market efficiency (in either Excel of SPSS) of any country’s stock market for the Year 2017 and 2018. (This requires 3 regressions, sample of the years 2017-2018, sample of the year 2017 and finally the sample of the year 2018.
  3. Present your regression results output and briefly discuss your findings in the context of your literature review completed in part a.

This assignment can be done individually or in a group of no more than two students. Please submit your report in pdf format to Moodle no later than 11pm Saturday 21st December.

Abstract

The purpose of this research study is to explore the importance of innovation on the retail business in the U.A.E. in this most competitive era. The study will more look over the perspective for both entrepreneurs and customers, how the life of the new generation made it more convenient by utilizing innovation into businesses particularly in the retail industry. And how it became difficult for entrepreneurs to compete with each other not to mention huge exiting rivals in terms of pricing and marketing strategy to raise brand awareness. The main objective of this research study is to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the new innovation in the lives of entrepreneurs and end users.

In customers’ perspective, these days the use of innovation in retail businesses mold convenience for all of us to purchase things or service we need without being physically present in the location, specially, if you’re trying to purchase overseas, with a lot of variants as well as the available selection of different merchants. This leads us to do more activities on the side, gives us a lot of time to relax, extension to work, spend time with family, and a lot more. However these won’t apply to some extent of customers’ expectation towards the product or service. Might be a sort of factory defect, quality issue, and failed to deliver on expected date. On the other hand, in entrepreneurs’ perspective innovation should help them increase and grow their sales. But unfortunately the use innovation made it easy for customers to access and allow them to select numbers of merchants. This won’t be easy in terms of price competition. The large scale of merchants selling the same products could affect the selling price and would cost them for marketing to reach their target customers. If you can imagine the world with most people living wants to become a seller or merchants.

1. Read Chapter 1 of Social Science Research: Principles, Methods, and Practices. Briefly discuss something from Chapter 1 that you think you can now apply in your upcoming thesis project.

As I read the book of Social Science Research: Principles, Methods, and Practices in chapter one, it has clearly differentiated and define the true meaning of Science and Scientific Research. Chapter one has elaborated what is science and its classification, the explanation scientific knowledge, what is scientific research and its cycle of research, what is scientific method and its four characteristics, a proper introduction about the types of scientific research which are the following Exploratory Research, Descriptive Research and Explanatory Research, and a discussion of the history of scientific thought.

Referring to my Master Thesis,given Title of “The Impact of Innovation on Retail Business in the U.A.E.” I am looking forward to do more on exploration to figure out the impact of innovation to the retail businesses in the U.A.E. Since the goal of the master thesis is to explore the use of innovation to the stated research.Therefore, the scientific research that I may conduct and use will be exploratory research to state a conclusion.

2. Prepare a brief 300 word outline of a topic you are considering researching as part of your thesis requirement at the end of your MBA studies.

a.) Title

As part of my MBA program, my Master Thesis title will be “The impact of innovation on retail business in the U.A.E.”, I aim to conduct research and explore the importance of using innovation on retail businesses in the U.A.E in both entrepreneurs’ perspective and customers’ perspective. My research study will be focused on the advantage and disadvantage side and draw a conclusion why the use of innovation is highly in-demand by the present generation.

b.) The two main research questions are the following

Question 1: In entrepreneurs’ perspective: What are the advantage and disadvantage of innovation on retail business?

Question 2: In Customers’ perspective: What are the advantage and disadvantage of innovation on retail business?

c.) Plans on how to collect data

In most cases, it is undeniable that it is not hard to collect data regarding about my research topic nor primary data may not be found available online. Somehow there are ways to collect data by conducting informal qualitative approach, such as surveys, distribution of questionnaires, taking an appointment for a personal interview, and a direct discussion with the entrepreneurs (Business Owners) and customers. However traditional way of collecting data may take longer than having primary data available online.

d.) Distribution and conducting traditional way of collecting data

As I mentioned above “c.) Plans on how to collect data” I would be focus on conducting appointments for interviews and surveys to a number of business owners who are based in Dubai particularly in retail and wholesale. And in order to understand the customers’ side I would definitely talk and discuss some points with customers (friends, colleagues, family members & strangers in some public places).

e.) Type of statistical analysis to be use for my thesis

Refers to my given statement about in question number 1, It would more on exploration about the impact of innovation on retail businesses in order to draw a conclusion that relates with my research topic. On the other hand, although descriptive does not support conclusions. It may would be a bit mixed of descriptive, as I will be describing the information gathered from my interviews and surveys.
