Coursework brief 2022

Coursework report – an enhanced Non-Technical Summary

The aims of your coursework:

  • To understand how an EIA is undertaken and how an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is put together and written
  • To appraise an EIA development and identify how it can be realised with as little environmental impact and as many environmental enhancements as possible
  • To produce a Non-Technical Summary (NTS) of the EIA and project that incorporates your analysis and is informed by best practice in producing NTSs.

Remember, a good NTS will evidence these two elements:

  • Your analysis of the development and existing EIA, leading to improvements incorporated in your NTS
  • Innovation and best practice in producing NTSs

Aim for the best outcome for the environment communicated very clearly.

There is a group process we will work on and then individual work to complete.

As a group, you will write an enhanced chapter from the EIA of Ecopark (on the Blackboard in the Ecopark folder).

Then, having a good overview of the whole project, you will individually write and submit a Non-technical summary (NTS) for the whole EIA, not just the chapter you have worked on.

The process you need to follow is summarised in the following flowchart. (The click link works best from the pdf on the Blackboard page or the link in the Assignments folder).

EIA project on Ecopark

Process

We will follow the environmental impact assessment process through from initial project proposal to completing an Environmental Impact Statement.  You will gain an understanding of best practice in the EIA process and apply this to critically assess the work you undertake.  The aim is for you to gain a substantial body of knowledge about EIA practice and to also make significant steps in becoming reflexive practitioners who undertake their work in the light of evolving best practice.   The steps in the process you will undertake include the following:

As a group/ class

Site visit

Scoping (using a scoping matrix)

Analysing data on potential impacts

Critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the EIA undertaken on the development and the EIA process that has been followed.  You may include amendments and additions to the scheme as originally proposed.

As a group, write an enhanced chapter for the EIS, taking account of your analysis of the proposed scheme, the EIA work undertaken to date by the developer and any proposed changes you suggest.

Please note: The aim of the re-worked chapters is to explore innovation in handling and presenting complex environmental information.  You need not necessarily reproduce the whole chapter once you have been able to demonstrate you are presenting the information in a more effective way.

Individual

Produce a summary table, Maximum one side A4, of your critical evaluation of the EIS as originally submitted for this application and the key areas for improvement you identify.

This will potentially include variations in project design to embed mitigation, improved mitigation measures and further environmental enhancements.  It will also critique the EIA process the developer followed and suggest improvements. Include your summary table as an appendix to the NTS.  The table does not form part of the word count.

The NTS should incorporate and evidence the analysis summarised in your table.

Produce an enhanced Non-technical summary (NTS) of the whole development proposal.  This should aim to maximise the gain for the environment.

2000 word limit, the report to include maps, illustrations, diagrams, tables, photographs as appropriate.  This is the assessed component.

The NTS should reflect best practice and be presented to a professional standard.  It should be self- explanatory, easy to read, free of technical jargon and clearly inform the reader of the details of the proposed development, potential environmental impacts and mitigation measures proposed.  It should include photographs, tables, maps, plans etc as appropriate.  There is further guidance on the module blackboard page.

You will find it helpful to consult EISs and NTSs for other developments.  We will critique some in class.

In summary, to successfully complete this EIA coursework you must:

  • As an individual, analyse the proposed development and produce an enhanced NTS of the whole project EIA.  (You must include the summary table of your analysis as an appendix).

The mark for this coursework is based 100% on this individual NTS report.

Referencing and word count

You are undertaking this project work as though you work on behalf of Ecotricity.  Any material produced by Ecotricity does not need referencing.  Material from other sources should be referenced.

Words on maps and graphics are not included in the word count which should be understood as applying to the paragraphs of text in the document.  The summary table of your critical evaluation is not in the word count.
