Malaysians have been co\ufb00ee drinkers ever since the late 19th century. This habit was in\ufb02uenced by the Chinese immigrants. White co\ufb00ee was \ufb01rst sold by a Hainanese co\ufb00ee roasting master in one of the old co\ufb00ee shops in \u2018Old Town\u2019 Ipoh. Gradually, white co\ufb00ee began to put its mark on Malaysian culture and society.<\/p>\n

The rise of the popularity of this drink was also due to the arrival of branded retail outlets such as Co\ufb00ee Bean and Starbucks in the local market around 1997-98. The Malaysian local co\ufb00ee culture grew, starting with the commercializing of so called \u2018kopitiams\u2019 (derived \u00a0from \u00a0the \u00a0work \u00a0\u2018kopi\u2019, \u00a0from \u00a0Malay\/Hokkien for co\ufb00ee and \u2018tiam\u2019, which means shop in Hokkien), which is the rebranding of local co\ufb00ee shops by upgrading their services by not only selling products, but also embracing technology as part of their marketing plans. The OLDTOWN White Co\ufb00ee brand is an example of this upgrading.<\/p>\n

Today, OLDTOWN White Co\ufb00ee is Malaysia\u2019s largest halal-certi\ufb01ed kopitiam. OLDTOWN White Co\ufb00ee was established by a two-man team, Mr. Goh Chin Mun and Mr. Tan Say Yap in Ipoh, Perak, in 1999. Initially, the company operated as a local co\ufb00ee shop but has now expanded its business to almost all states in Malaysia and as well as internationally. The group opened its 200th outlet in a period of just over seven years. Now, OLDTOWN is diversifying its products by exporting its instant beverage mixes to more than 14 countries and is publicly listed on Bursa Malaysia\u2019s main board and has expanded even further into cafe outlets, franchise outlets and food processing facilities.<\/p>\n
