Corporate Responsibility (or CSR) has gained unprecedented momentum\u00a0in business and public debate and has become a strategic issue crossing\u00a0discipline boundaries and affecting the way in which a company does<\/p>\n

business. It has become so important that many organisations have\u00a0rebranded their core values to include social responsibility. Almost all\u00a0corporate websites, policies and reports present endeavours for CSR as\u00a0a way of ensuring that the organisation is fulfilling all obligations towards\u00a0society and thus is eligible for the license to operate. Increasingly,\u00a0organisations refer to their CSR activities as honouring a quadruple\u00a0bottom line: Profits, People, Planet, Philanthropy. These activities of\u00a0CSR differ from organisation to organisation depending on the resources<\/p>\n

available to an organisation for undertaking CSR practices.\u00a0However, the practice of CSR is subject to much debate and criticism.\u00a0Some proponents argue that there is a strong business case for CSR, in\u00a0that corporations benefit in multiple ways by operating with a perspective\u00a0broader and longer than their own immediate, short-term profits. Other\u00a0proponents argue that honouring the quadruple bottom line is a moral\u00a0minimum that organisations are obligated to uphold. Some speak about\u00a0the purpose of business beyond profits. Critics argue that CSR distracts<\/p>\n

from the fundamental economic role of businesses. Others argue that it\u00a0is nothing more than superficial window-dressing; while others argue that\u00a0it is an attempt to pre-empt the role of governments as a watchdog over<\/p>\n

powerful multinational corporations.\u00a0Using a wide array of refereed journal articles, current and classic,\u00a0discuss and critically analyse the various perspectives on CSR outlined\u00a0above and discussed in the academic literature. Illustrate your\u00a0discussion and analysis with reference to what companies are doing in\u00a0practice. In the conclusion to your essay, present your key findings or\u00a0recommendations on the purpose and ethical \/ social obligations of\u00a0business, and the essence of why you have reached those findings or\u00a0recommendations.\u00a0As a minimum your discussion and analysis should utilise between 20\u00a0and 25 refereed journal articles and include a mix of current (2000 –\u00a02015) and some classic (e.g. Friedman, 1970; Simon, Powers &\u00a0Gunnmann, 1972) articles. You may substitute 25-30% of the prescribed\u00a0number of journals with textbooks. proceed to read Milton Friedman\u2019s 1970 article (in the text) and the brief\u00a0excerpt from Simon, et al. (1972) available on e-reserve and Moodle.\u00a0You should then search for relevant articles via the University\u2019s Library<\/p>\n
