You are employed as a career in an aged care facility and were assigned to look after Harry, a 70 year old es-soldier who is suffering from vascular dementia. On the morning that your were assigned to henry, he is reminiscing about his life as a Vietnam War soldier.
1. Explain how you would build a relationship with and provide assistance to Harry, his family and friends, taking into account the following:
(a) Harry’s care plan, his specific needs and wants to ensure that he has a stable and familiar environment.
(b) The use of appropriate communication strategies particularly the application of a person-cantered care approach in your interactions to prove reassurance, gain his trust, relieve distress and agitation and recognize signs of abuse.
(c) List some activities that you can organize for Harry to provide him the opportunity to preserve his dignity and maintain his skills and health. This may also include organising activities that allows him to:
- Maintain independence using familiar routine and existing skills
- Reflect on his cultural likes and dislikes in Oder to bring pleasurable memories
