The Effectiveness of Sacha Inchi Oil Against Adults

Sacha inchi (or its scientific name Plukenetia volubilis L.) is a wild and grown plant that can be found in Peru. Typically, it grows at an altitude of between 100 m above sea level in low forests and 2000 m above sea level in high Amazon forests, such as in areas of Amazonas, Cusco, Junín, Pasco, San Martin, Loreto, and Madre de Dios.

Sacha inchi is a potentially high cereal crop because the plant’s seeds are rich in unsaturated fatty acids, especially linolenic acid (a type of omega-3 fatty acid) and a small number of linoleic acids (a type of omega-6 fatty acid). Sacha inchi also contains proteins and sterols.

Sacha inchi oil is also an alternative for fish oil rich in omega-3. The ratio of omega-6: the omega-3 contained in sacha inchi seed oil is about 7:10. Since fish oil has a less pleasant taste, more people choose to consume sacha inchi oil than fish oil.

Because inchi sacha oil is increasingly being used as an alternative to a variety of foods worldwide, consumers need to know about the effectiveness and safety of its consumption.

In 2014, a randomized controlled study on suitability, safety and effectiveness in the intake of sacha inchi oil orally against adults was conducted byGustavo F. The study aims to assess the effectiveness and side effects of the use of sacha inchi oil (which is rich in linolenic acid)as well as sunflower oil (which is rich in linoleat acid)on the subject of a group of adults.

In the study, a total of 30 subjects (comprising 13 males and 17 women) received 10 or 15 ml of sacha inchi oil or sunflowers a day for four months. The effectiveness effect of sacha inchi oil intake was reported to be low in the first week of the study, which was 37.5%.

During the sixth week of study, the effectiveness in the intake of sacha inchi oil and sunflowers has reportedly increased significantly by 81.25% to 93.75%. The findings found that both oils were able to lower LDL cholesterol levels (a type of dangerous cholesterol) as well as the blood pressure of the subject arterypara.

In the first weeks of the study, the effectiveness of consumption was reported higher for sunflower oil compared to sacha inchi oil. In the second week to the fifth, no difference was observed between subjects taking sacha inchi oil or sunflowers.
